In order to comply with OSHA 1910.147 and to follow best practices for safe LOTO, it is crucial to include certain steps in a Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedure.

Smart SOP makes this easy by providing a template of steps, which can be inserted to your LOTO procedure, to guide you through developing an effective LOTO procedure.

There are two sets of compliance steps, one for lockout and one for removing lockout/tagout:

Lockout Steps:

  1. Notify Others: Notify all affected personnel.
  2. Local Shut-Down: Shut down the equipment at the local hand auto switch.
  3. Primary Energy Disconnect: Shut down primary energy disconnect.
  4. Isolate Secondary Energy: Isolate all other energy sources.
  5. Release Stored Energy: Release any stored energy in the equipment.
  6. Apply Lockout Device: Apply lockout device and tag to all energy isolation points.
  7. Verify Equipment Deenergized: Verify the equipment has been totally deenergized
  8. Service Equipment: Perform any necessary service to equipment.

Remove LOTO Steps:

  1. Remove Tools: Ensure all tools and items have been removed.
  2. Confirm Employees' Safety: Confirm that all employees are safely located.
  3. Verify Controls in Neutral: Verify that controls are in neutral.
  4. Remove Lockout Devices: Remove lockout devices and reenergize the machine.
  5. Notify Others: Notify affected employees that servicing is completed.

Click the buttons on the Lockout Steps and Remove LOTO Steps tabs when developing your LOTO procedure. Please note that clicking this button will DELETE any steps you have already created. For this reason it is important to add the compliance steps at the beginning of the process. Once you have added the steps you can edit, rearrange and delete them just like any other step.
